LawMaster has announced its successful tender for the provision of a Legal Resource Management LRM System for the Crown Solicitor’s Office of South Australia (CSO).

The CSO is a division of the South Australian Attorney-General’s Department, responsible for the provision of legal services to the Attorney-General, to Cabinet and to all government agencies in South Australia.

The CSO has used LawMaster Version 9 as its legal resource management software system since April 2000. In 2010, as part of an upgrade of its systems and infrastructure, the CSO conducted an open tender to identify the best product for its business needs. An important criteria was value for money. LawMaster Version 10 (LMV10) won the tender.

The CSO evaluation process was very rigorous and included representatives from all sections of its business to assess the products on offer.

Gabi Jaksa, Deputy Crown Solicitor, said: “The CSO is very excited about the implementation of LMV10. Initial demonstration of the product to our staff has generated very positive feedback. The addition of new features in Version 10 and the more contemporary look and feel of its user interface, while maintaining our familiarity with the existing LawMaster functionality, provides the optimal outcome for CSO staff.”

Lawyers can gain 30 per cent better results by integrating people, processes, and performance using effective practice management software. It’s proven. However, and surprisingly, the benefits can be more critical for the smaller firm than they are for the larger practice. Legal Resource Management (LRM) software enables lawyers to earn more from their day. They achieve this through efficiencies created from more resourceful management of documents, automating as many processes as possible, integrating case and matter management and document assembly leaving more non-billable work to para legal and less senior staff. Numerous testimonials are available from law firms that have created more distributable profits per partner due to the introduction of innovative LRM systems like LawMaster, which is easy to use, intuitive and very effective. In spite of the measurable benefits however, smaller firms will often take the view that practice management software is a cost they can do without and too complex for those who just want to practice law. They rely on time recording software or related billing methodologies for accounting and maintain largely outdated processes. Their focus is on the costs of the technology rather than its business case.

Increasing the profitability of a law firm has never been more challenging. So it makes sense to introduce systems that create efficiencies and drive returns. One of the most effective initiatives is the adoption of software that enables lawyers to focus more on legal matters, leaving day-to-day operations to lower billed staff. There is much to choose from. Numerous software providers have a product to assist lawyers capture and track documents. Some record client instructions, others generate reports, and capture time. Most offer some level of management recording that supposedly reduces non-billable time. These solutions work on single PCs, on practice servers, or operate in the ‘cloud’ – serviceable on different devices and multiple sites. Given the choices, it is not surprising to learn that law firms often get it wrong.

Paul Tedder, the CIO and his IT team at Shine Lawyers have recently endured the pain of a document management refresh but are now basking in the sunshine of its gain. Shine Lawyers has built its team- from three to 22 offices in the past five years- on a trio of core values: standing up for the little guy, daring to be different and staying ahead of the pack. Tedder says, being able to keep all the documentation the firm produces and make it available to 350 staff across all its offices has played a major role in its rapid growth. The document management system (DMS) from LawMaster across its 22 offices helps people get fast responses and has increased revenue by 30% for the firm…
